Kinsey Deakin is a Vancouver-based multidisciplinary artist whose work spans painting, collage, and installation art. Originally from Ontario, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Thompson Rivers University, along with a certificate in graphic design from In Focus Film School.
Her multidisciplinary approach explores themes of surrealism and its connection to nature, bringing the things we cannot always see to the surface to capture the imagination and create experiences that feel immersive and meditative. She draws inspiration from the patterns found in nature—seeing the surreal in the smallest, most intricate details like sand ripples or designs on a seashell—speaking to a deep appreciation for the world around us, both seen and unseen. Collaging is a significant part of her process and often transforms into a new idea in the way of painting or sculpture. Her work in all forms conveys a message of the subconscious making its way into everyday spaces.
This lampshade was created using repurposed and discarded fabric pieces and was specifically designed to mimic that of stained glass. The patchwork adds a personal touch as each piece of fabric tells its own story but when stitched together becomes part of a bigger narrative. The metaphor of stained glass is a visual representation of light filtering through the cracks of our old habits, showing beauty and potential in what we often overlook or discard while shining light on the potential for sustainability and change through repurposed materials.
